Ashby began playing guitar at age eleven and formed his first band with his brother (Taylor) and Shawn McElrath under the guidance of John McElrath, the founder of the Swingin' Medallions. After a year or so, Shawn and Taylor became members of the Double Shot Gang and Ashby went to the University of South Carolina. While at Carolina earning a business degree, Ashby joined several local bands and made a lot of friends in the local music community.
